Exhibit 5Design: This ad was created as part of a company's outreach effort to follow-up with a community about the results of a public hearing on fare policy. This ad was sent to the local university's electronic distribution list, and was accompanied by similar versions for Facebook and flyer distribution. The desaturated bus creates the highest point of contrast in the image and serves as the focal point. That contrast is balanced by the white to blue gradient background, and lens flare behind the group of student silhouettes. The blue of the logo is used in the background gradient and also repeated in the blue to black gradient of the silhouette figures. The silhouette gradients helps distinguish the figures in front of the bus. The text mostly sans serif to stand out, and is highlighted through strokes and drop shadows. Some serif is used for contrast. The lens flare, diminishing sizes of the silhouettes, and rays of lights add depth and interest.
Process: The image is 1366 x 768 px for the electronic distribution list with 72 dpi. The bus image was originally a color photo belonging to the company. I used the pen tool and a clipping mask to isolate it, the dodge and burn tool to lighten and darken it selectively, and imported the selection into Adobe Illustrator to change the photo into a two color bus vector using live trace. I downloaded the silhouettes as vector images, and made them brush selections. I overlaid the blue background with a gradient in luminosity mode, and added a lens flare behind the students. The rays of light were brushes placed with reduced opacity. The people were overlaid with a custom gradient in pass-through mode. The title stroke effects were placed center in normal blend mode, and the other strokes were placed outside in linear light mode with slightly reduced fill. My signature was placed in the bottom right corner with reduced opacity.
